Hanging on His Every Word

"We study the Bible because it is the whole counsel of God."

One of the biggest misconceptions people have about the Bible is that it is incomprehensible. Though it is true that Scripture is complex and profound, there could hardly be a bigger lie than claiming that it is beyond our apprehension and understanding.

Consider the proclamation of Deuteronomy 29:29: "The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our sons forever..."

There is a difference between "secrets" and "the things revealed." When God speaks to us in His Word, He does not whisper, obfuscate, or speak in code. The purpose of His declarations is to make clear to us what we need to know--to communicate essential truths that we are to hold on to.

Repeatedly in the Bible, God's people are called to cling to Him (Deuteronomy 10:20, 11:22, 13:4, Joshua 23:8, Psalm 63:8, Revelation 2:13, 2:25). At the same time, God's people are called to cling to His word.

"I have placed Your ordinances before me. I cling to Your testimonies; O Lord, do not put me to shame!" Psalm 119:130b-131

"Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps My word he will never see death." John 8:51

"I am coming quickly; hold fast what you have, so that no one will take your crown." Revelation 3:11

We have the Word of God made sure--revelation from our Creator that equips for all of life and godliness. He has given it to us that it may belong to us as a prized possession we cling to forever. How could we not carefully examine such a wondrous gift?
