Jesus Skeptic: Where did you come from?

Have you ever thought about where you came from?

No, really.

Not just "I came from my parents" or "Science will figure that stuff out." But genuinely, seriously, thoughtfully-- where did you come from?

The author of Ecclesiastes believes that there is a Creator (12:1). The same man who struggled with the purpose of life and the reasons why we work so hard wrote that he believed we were hand-crafted by a greater Being.

If that is true, then why don't some of us feel created

Truly, this only I have found:
      That God made man upright,
But they have sought out many schemes.
Ecclesiastes 7:29

You see, according to Solomon, we were all made just the way God wanted us to be made. He doesn't make mistakes in His designs. However, we have "sought out many schemes"-- we have turned from the Lord. Solomon declares that we "do evil a hundred times" (8:12) and that our hearts are "full of evil" (9:3).

This explains why you may not feel a connection to your Creator-- you are a part of an evil scheme, a scheme that we invented in rebellion against our Designer. Those who do not know God do not teach special creation. They will teach that we are mere chance organisms (not special in any way), and that our life, therefore, is purposeless.

The truth of the Word of God explains reality for us:

You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body
and knit me together in my mother’s womb.
Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex!
Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it.
You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion,
as I was woven together in the dark of the womb.
You saw me before I was born.
Every day of my life was recorded in your book.
   Every moment was laid out
before a single day had passed.

Psalm 139:13-16, NLT

This is a wonderful truth, is it not? You are not just made from dust. Yes it is true, you really were made from dust. However, God breathed life into us

And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground,
and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life;
and man became a living being.
Genesis 2:7

You are special. You were made for a purpose. Do not let anyone or anything tell you something different. God designed you very specifically. Jesus confirms this by stating "the very hairs of your head are all numbered," (Matt 10:30). What a wonderful, privileged life we have been given.

Once again, Solomon, the author of Ecclesiastes, writes "He has made everything beautiful in its time." And not only that, but "also He has put eternity in their hearts," (Ecc 3:11).

So you know where you've come from-- you've come from a wonderful God. But now, knowing that you are evil, do you know where you are going? Eternity is in your heart. We'll discuss that next time.
